Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan is a government-administered health plan that guarantees access to medically necessary hospital and health care services.

Note: Postdocs appointed for less than 12 months are not eligible for AHCIP, and must enroll in the University of Alberta Health Insurance Plan instead (UAHIP). To enroll in UAHIP, please locate your department on the Pension and Benefit Advisory list and contact the corresponding Pension and Benefit Advisor.
Also Note: If you are not a Canadian or Permanent resident and are arriving to the UAlberta from another province or territory within Canada you will not be eligible for Alberta Health Care for three months from the time you arrive. During this three month period, you are eligible to enroll in the University of Alberta Health Insurance Plan (UAHIP). To enroll in UAHIP, please locate your department on the Pension and Benefit Advisory list and contact the corresponding Pension and Benefit Advisor.
University Postdoc Supplemental Health Plan
This supplemental health plan provides assistance for some hospital, medical and dental care expenses which are not covered by Alberta Health Care (eg, prescription drugs, ambulance costs).
If your PDF appointment is full-time, you and your dependents are required to be enrolled in this supplemental plan unless your spouse/partner has comparable coverage (verification required). The plan is provided through Great-West Life Assurance Company.

Note: Coverage starts on the first day of month following the month in which your postdoc appointment began.
Effective July 01, 2016, the yearly cost of the postdoc supplemental benefits is $655.68 for single coverage; or $1,893.48 for family coverage.
In addition, effective February 01, 2016 the PDFAP (Postdoctoral Fellows Assistance Program) is $5.50 per month and the cost of WCB (Workers Compensation Board) is $0.36 per $100.00 based upon the annual stipend
